Don’t worry — You can take advantage of CBD’s balancing properties without having to worry that it will get you “stoned” or “high.”
You may have heard about the natural benefits of adding CBD to your daily regimen but are hesitant because you’re concerned it’ll get you high.
We get it! We’re like you and we want to know how our body will respond to any type of supplements.
Let’s take a close look at CBD and explain whether or not it’s psychoactive so that you can decide if the supplement is right for you.
Will CBD Get Me Stoned?
Are you worried CBD will get you high? You don’t need to be!
The easy answer to the question is no. CBD alone will not get you high.
There’s a reason why there’s a growing demand for CBD in the U.S. and around the world among those with active lifestyles. With CBD products, which are federally legal, you’re not going to be slowed down by getting stoned.
We know that you’re always hustling and on the move, so you’ll be happy to hear that you can take advantage of CBD’s balancing properties without having to experience any:
- Skewed perception of time
- Spacing in and out (consciousness)
- Delayed reaction times
- Coordination problems
- Sensory awareness issues
CBD is completely non-psychoactive, so it won’t cause any euphoric effects like some other cannabis products.
Here’s Why CBD Oil Won’t Get You High
Not everyone enjoys the high caused by marijuana. If you’re looking for the natural health benefits of cannabinoids without getting bogged down by psychoactive effects, CBD oil supplements are ideal.
There are two reasons why CBD oil will not get you high:
1. CBD Oil is High in CBD, Low in THC
When people get high from cannabis, they’ve consumed a product containing THC (tetrahydrocannabinol). THC is the cannabinoid that is responsible for producing those euphoric, “stoned” effects often associated with marijuana.
CBD oil contains only trace levels of THC – far too little to be psychoactive when consumed at suggested servings. Rather, CBD oil abundant in CBD (cannabidiol), a non-psychoactive cannabinoid.
While CBD and THC are both plant-derived cannabinoids, they interact with the body differently. Both CBD and THC interact with the body’s endocannabinoid system through specialized cannabinoid receptors (CB1 and CB2 receptors). It is through this interaction with these receptors within the body that these cannabinoids help our bodies run at their peak. They each bind to the receptors to provide their effects.
THC directly binds with CB1 receptors, found in your brain and central nervous system. It is this activation of CB1 receptors by THC that causes that well-known psychoactive high you’re trying to avoid.
CBD doesn’t bind directly to CB1 receptors. Instead, it acts indirectly as what scientists refer to as an “antagonist.” Instead of binding and activating the CB1 receptor, it blocks the receptor and prevents it from binding to cannabinoids like THC. So in addition to not causing a high, CBD actually actively helps prevent one.
2. CBD Oil is Made From Hemp, Not Marijuana
Dixie Botanicals® CBD oil products are made from hemp plants, not marijuana. While both hemp and marijuana are part of the Cannabis sativa L. plant species, they have unique chemical makeups and are used for very different purposes.
Marijuana is commonly bred specifically so that its flowers produce high levels of THC, which are harvested for their euphoric, psychoactive properties that make people feel stoned. Depending on the strain, marijuana can contain THC concentrations that range from 10 percent to 30 percent.
Hemp, on the other hand, is naturally very low in THC, containing no more than 0.3 percent THC per dry weight. This level of THC is far too low to cause someone to get high. While hemp is harvested commercially for its seeds and stalks, which can be used to produce a number of products, it is also cultivated to produce a much higher concentration of CBD. The CBD-rich hemp oil, extracted from the plant’s stalks and seeds, also contain highly nutritious elements, including omega-3 fatty acids, vitamins, minerals, terpenes, chlorophyll, and amino acids.
Despite their distinct differences, hemp is often wrongly lumped in with its cousin marijuana in prohibition. Although more than half of U.S. states have passed laws legalizing marijuana in some capacity, the use and possession of marijuana, whether for recreational or medical purposes, remains federally illegal in the U.S. Luckily, hemp products are federally legal in the U.S. provided they’re derived from imported hemp.
What Effects Does CBD Oil Have?
While CBD oil will not get you “high” in the traditional sense, some have reported experiencing a heightened sense of relaxation and choose to take their in the evenings or before bed. Others say they notice awakening effects, so prefer taking their CBD first thing in the morning or in the early afternoon when their energy levels start to lag.
Once your body absorbs CBD, the chemical compound interacts with your endocannabinoid system’s cannabinoid receptors to encourage balance in a wide array of physiological functions.
This central system’s responsibility is to maintain the body’s homeostasis for functions like:
- Immune response
As the outside environment influences your systems, causing them to fluctuate, your endocannabinoid system is constantly working to keep them in balance. CBD and other cannabinoids support the efforts of the endocannabinoid system.
CBD is thought to be well-tolerated and safe. Scientists looking into CBD’s effects and safety found that CBD had no adverse impact on:
- Heart rate
- Blood pressure
- Body temperature
- Glucose levels
- Oxygen and carbon dioxide exchange between lungs and bloodstream
Adding CBD Oil Into Your Regimen
While there are no psychoactive or known adverse side effects of CBD oil and scientists have found it to be well tolerated even at high doses, it’s always a good idea with any supplement to start with a small serving and gradually increase your intake. This will help you dial in on the daily CBD serving that works best for you.
If you have an ideal CBD serving in mind, start below that number. Begin by taking just a little bit and then gradually work your way up every week, monitoring how you feel.
Once you hit that ideal CBD serving size, you can then decide whether that amount is optimal or if your endocannabinoid system would do best with more or less.
