Cannabis products like CBD oil grew in popularity among athletes in 2018. Here’s why we believe next year will be even bigger for athletes and CBD.
If you think that CBD gained popularity among athletes in 2018, next year it’s going to be even bigger. Hemp was legalized under U.S. federal law in the waning days of 2018, setting the stage for hemp-derived CBD to really take off in 2019.
Many athletes regularly push themselves to the brink of their endurance and capabilities, making it crucial to take steps to promote overall health and encourage recovery. By supporting the endocannabinoid system, CBD can help an athlete’s body return to balance.
Cannabis products like CBD oil have become increasingly adopted by athletes, but we believe next year will be much bigger for athletes and CBD. Here’s why.
CBD Set to Go Mainstream
What hemp being fully legal, hemp-derived CBD is going to be much more widely accepted. The monumental policy change will help propel CBD into the mainstream by expediting the already rapidly shifting public attitudes on cannabis and its place in athletic training.
Even in the two week period since hemp has been fully legal, athlete-focused outlets and publications have been helping to spread the word about the natural benefits of CBD and how the cannabis-derived cannabinoid can help an athlete perform at his or her peak.
All in all, hemp being legalized is going to lead to more retail outlets and distributors welcoming CBD supplements into their stores. Also, more athletes and fitness enthusiasts who had been on the fence about adding CBD to their training will now be willing to jump all in.

As researchers gain a greater understanding of how CBD oil and its compounds influence the body’s functions, word will spread to more athletes.
Greater Acceptance From Competitive Sports Governing Bodies
A growing number of sports governing bodies and professional leagues are now allowing their athletes to use CBD before and during competition, as well as in their recovery routine afterward.
Competitive athletes received good news in 2017 when the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) and the United States Anti-Doping Agency (USADA) updated their prohibited substance lists, removing CBD and announcing that the cannabinoid was approved for use. This opened up CBD supplements to athletes that compete under WADA and the USADA’s regulations, including Olympic athletes, UFC fighters, competitive cheerleaders, boxers, bodybuilders, dancers, and more.
This year the BIG3, the 3-on-3 pro basketball league founded by Jeff Kwatinetz and Ice Cube, publicly announced that its players are permitted to use CBD to augment their training and competition. The move was groundbreaking, as it marked the very first professional sports league to allow CBD.
Each of these announcements have been big steps for the acceptance of cannabinoids in competitive sports, and it will no doubt lead to more governing bodies and sports leagues following suit.
Added note: Although CBD is now legal federally, some competitive sports still perform drug tests for THC. It is important to make sure that your chosen CBD supplement is THC-free.
