Why You Should Bike to Work, According to Science
Studies show commuting by bike boosts health, reduces stress, and improves your productivity throughout the day.
You probably won’t be surprised to hear that biking to and from the office everyday can be good for your health.
Countless studies have revealed an array of benefits of commuting by bike instead of driving or taking transit. In addition to saving you money, riding your bike to work, it turns out, can benefit you both physically and mentally.
Unfortunately, despite vast improvements in cycling infrastructure in many cities, less than 1 percent of American commuters regularly use bikes to get to work.
Here are a few scientifically-backed reasons why you should consider traveling on your two-wheeler rather than driving or taking transit, as well as how CBD can augment your bike commute.
Biking Reduces Stress, Boosts Energy
A frustrating journey to work can impact your mood and productivity for the rest of the day. If stress is something that often plagues your weekday mornings, bike commuting may be the answer to improve the start to your workday.
Research from Concordia University shows that pedaling to work rather than driving makes the first 45 minutes of your workday significantly less stressful.
Scientists looked at the effect that cycling, driving, and public transportation had on 123 employees at a Montreal-based information technology company. The goal was to get an ‘in-the-moment’ assessment of employees’ stress and mood after biking to work.
While 45 minutes may not seem like much, the boost of a better morning can have ripple effects on the rest of your day.
“Recent research has shown that early morning stress and mood are strong predictors of their effect later in the day,” said Stéphane Brutus, the study’s lead author. “They can shape how subsequent events are perceived, interpreted and acted upon for the rest of the day.”
Just recently, an article published in Environmental International found that those who use a bicycle as a form of transportation were more positive, healthy, and energized. Those who drove a car reported a lower amount of energy and higher overall stress, which was attributed to having to deal with noise, pollution, and traffic.
Starting off on a better foot by cycling to work can domino into an overall healthier, happier, and more productive day.
As someone motivated to tackle each day, you’ll likely be interested to hear that cycling to work can help you get to work on time and perform better in your role.
A survey of employers found that those who cycle to work are more productive and energetic and less “groggy” when they get to work.
A Dutch think tank found that workers who commuted by bike were less likely to call in sick and be absent from work. The longer and more frequent the commute, the better.
“The more often people cycle to work and the longer the distance traveled, the less they report sick,” the researchers concluded.
You have a long to-do list everyday. Biking to work may just be the boost you need to make every day a productive day.
Still not convinced? What if I were to tell you that people who bike to work live longer than people who drive or take transit?
That’s what the findings of a recent robust study published in the British Medical Journal suggest.
Using data from more than 26,000 workers, researchers Carlos Celis-Morales and his team found that bike commuting is linked to a significantly lower risk of death.
Independent of gender, age, ethnicity, deprivation, smoking status, physical activity, sedentary behavior, and dietary patterns, bike commuters were 41 percent less likely to die during the five-year study period than those who drove or took public transit.
Those who cycle to work had a 46 percent lower risk of developing and a 52 percent lower risk of dying from cardiovascular disease. They also had a 45 percent lower risk of developing and a 40 percent lower risk of dying from cancer.
Bring Your CBD
As you compile your bike commuting gear, be sure to bring along your favorite CBD product. Long miles and riding up and down hills can leave your body and its functions unbalanced.
CBD oil has recently emerged as a popular choice for both cyclists and bike commuters to optimize performance and recovery.
CBD, or cannabidiol, is an all-natural cannabinoid derived from cannabis plants like hemp. CBD can be safely pulled from the hemp plant in the form of a botanical extract called CBD oil. CBD oil can then be infused into various products designed to be taken as a supplement.
CBD helps keep the body balanced by supporting the endocannabinoid system, a major regulatory network responsible for keeping an eye on functions like immune system response, mood, sleep, and metabolism.
Taking CBD oil along for your ride to and from work is as easily as slipping an ultra compact bottle into your pocket. Our Dixie Botanicals® Dew Drop tinctures combine award-winning hemp CBD oil and vegetable glycerin. Take a couple drops under your tongue before or after your commute to encourage balance.
