Research from Concordia University shows that pedaling to work rather than driving makes the first 45 minutes of your workday significantly less stressful.

Scientists looked at the effect that cycling, driving, and public transportation had on 123 employees at a Montreal-based information technology company. The goal was to get an ‘in-the-moment’ assessment of employees’ stress and mood after biking to work.

While 45 minutes may not seem like much, the boost of a better morning can have ripple effects on the rest of your day.

“Recent research has shown that early morning stress and mood are strong predictors of their effect later in the day,” said Stéphane Brutus, the study’s lead author. “They can shape how subsequent events are perceived, interpreted and acted upon for the rest of the day.”

Just recently, an article published in Environmental International found that those who use a bicycle as a form of transportation were more positive, healthy, and energized. Those who drove a car reported a lower amount of energy and higher overall stress, which was attributed to having to deal with noise, pollution, and traffic.

Increased Productivity

A survey of employers found that those who cycle to work are more productive and energetic and less “groggy” when they get to work.

A Dutch think tank found that workers who commuted by bike were less likely to call in sick and be absent from work. The longer and more frequent the commute, the better.

“The more often people cycle to work and the longer the distance traveled, the less they report sick,” the researchers concluded.

Live Longer

That’s what the findings of a recent robust study published in the British Medical Journal suggest.

Using data from more than 26,000 workers, researchers Carlos Celis-Morales and his team found that bike commuting is linked to a significantly lower risk of death.

Independent of gender, age, ethnicity, deprivation, smoking status, physical activity, sedentary behavior, and dietary patterns, bike commuters were 41 percent less likely to die during the five-year study period than those who drove or took public transit.

Those who cycle to work had a 46 percent lower risk of developing and a 52 percent lower risk of dying from cardiovascular disease. They also had a 45 percent lower risk of developing and a 40 percent lower risk of dying from cancer.
