What is CBD?
CBD, or cannabidiol, is an exciting natural cannabinoid found in the stalk and seed of cannabis plants like hemp. Cannabinoids are the natural compounds that are responsible for the various effects that cannabis products can provide.
You’ve likely heard of the cannabinoid THC, right? That’s the cannabinoid found in marijuana products that causes a high. CBD is the other major cannabinoid found in cannabis, but unlike THC, it’s non-psychoactive and won’t make you high. There are over 100 cannabinoids in cannabis that have so far been identified.
While CBD is but one of many cannabinoids, there’s a reason why more and more people are adding CBD into their daily health regimens. When used as a dietary supplement, CBD can keep your body running at its best.
Thankfully, CBD is naturally abundant in hemp, so it can be easily extracted from the plant in the form of a type of cannabis oil – CBD oil.
When CBD oil is pulled from hemp plants, it contains a high level of CBD, plus an array of other nutritious material like omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids, amino acids, vitamins, chlorophyll, and trace levels of other cannabinoids.
CBD oil can be infused in different types of CBD supplements, such as tinctures, chews, and topicals, or filtered for greater concentration. The CBD molecules in the hemp oil can also be isolated to create a more potent CBD supplement.

Common Questions About CBD
Our understanding of CBD has expanded over the years, and we’re more aware today than ever of the cannabinoid’s potential for keeping our bodies running at their best. With the decades of research out there on CBD’s natural health benefits, we know you have many questions about the powerful cannabinoid and how it may revitalize your daily supplement routine.
What are the Effects of CBD?
CBD is able to affect the body by interacting with its endocannabinoid system. This large regulatory network is tasked with keeping a wide array of bodily functions – such as mood, appetite, metabolism, sleep, and pain and immune system response – in balance.
Your body is able to make its own cannabinoids to interact with the endocannabinoid system to control communication between cells and regulate your body’s functions. CBD shares a similar function and makeup to these cannabinoids, which allows it to also interact with the endocannabinoid system.
By interacting with cannabinoid receptors all throughout your body, CBD stimulates your endocannabinoid system to encourage its efforts in keeping your functions in check.
For a more comprehensive look at the endocannabinoid system and its role in health, check out this article: “What is the Endocannabinoid System?”
Does CBD Get Me High?
Nope. Because CBD is extracted from high-CBD, low-THC hemp, it will not get you high like marijuana does. Hemp contains no more than 0.3% THC by dry weight, so as long as you stick with suggested serving sizes you don’t have to worry about hemp-derived CBD oil supplements getting you stoned or impairing your abilities to function in any way. They will cause no negative impacts on your sensory awareness, perception, consciousness, reaction time, or behavior.
While there are thousands of varieties of hemp, the cultivars used to make CBD oil supplements contain significantly higher levels of CBD. With these CBD-potent plants, it’s relatively simple to extract a hemp oil with high levels of CBD that you can take as a daily supplement without dealing with any psychoactive effects.

How Do you Take CBD?
There are several methods for taking CBD that you can choose from. This allows you to pick the one (or two) that best fits with your routine and needs.
CBD supplements can be taken in four ways:
- Ingestion (swallowed)
- Sublingual (absorbed under the tongue)
- Inhalation (vaped or dabbed)
- Topical (rubbed onto the skin)
While some CBD users prefer one method, others enjoy incorporating different types of products and methods of consumption into their routine.

How Much CBD Should I Take?
Unfortunately, there’s no straight answer to how much CBD you should take everyday. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has not yet established any Recommended Daily Intake (RDA) for daily CBD servings. Because Dixie Botanicals® complies with FDA regulations, we do not list an RDI of our own or provide a Daily Value (%DV) of CBD for our supplements.
The right daily CBD serving size depends on your personal needs and could be different from someone else’s. We recommend that you begin with a lower potency and gradually work your way up every few weeks as you monitor how you feel. This allows you to better dial in on how much CBD everyday is ideal for you.

Will CBD Make Me Fail a Drug Test?
Most drug tests look specifically for THC and its main metabolite, THC-COOH. THC is the compound found in marijuana that binds with receptors in your brain to cause a high.
Because at most there is only trace amounts of THC found in CBD oil, in most cases CBD supplements will not cause a positive drug test provided you take them at suggested servings. Most drug tests do not detect the presence of CBD.
Some studies have shown that eating hemp foods and consuming hemp oils can, in rare cases, cause a positive result in urine and blood tests. Therefore, anyone who is concerned about testing positive on a drug test should avoid CBD oil products.
THC-free CBD supplements are available for those interested in avoiding even trace levels of THC.

Are There Side Effects of CBD?
First, we should reiterate again that CBD supplements will not cause you to get “high.” Hemp-derived CBD oil is completely non-psychoactive.
While there have been some reports of dry mouth, low blood pressure, and drowsiness with CBD, scientists looking into the safety of taking CBD have found it to be a “safe” and “well tolerated” supplement. Their research review investigating CBD side effects found that CBD had no negative effects on the following:
- Blood pressure
- Heart rate
- Body temperature
- Glucose levels
- Body temperature
- Potassium and sodium levels
So how does CBD make you feel? Some of our regular CBD users have reported an awakening effect after they take their supplement, while others have said they experience a heightened sense of calm. Others say they don’t notice any immediate sensation after taking CBD, but that with regular use they feel increased energy throughout the day and improved sleep patterns at night.

Is CBD Legal?
Yep! Provided that CBD is sourced from imported hemp, it is legal in the United States, no doctor’s prescription or medical card needed.
The federal law that regulates marijuana specifically excludes hemp’s “mature stalks,” “oil or cake made from the seeds,” and “sterilized seeds.” These parts of the hemp plant are what we use to legally make our CBD oil products.
While growing hemp for commercial purposes in the U.S. still remains illegal except for some state-approved pilot programs, it is legal to make, sell, and buy products made from imported hemp.
Outside of the U.S., hemp-derived CBD is also legal in over 40 countries worldwide. This means that in most cases, these highly demanded hemp CBD products are available for purchase online and delivery straight to your door.

CBD for Athletes
Athletes of all levels, from weekend warriors to Olympic-caliber champions, have begun to incorporate daily CBD into their regimen. Many have found CBD and its interaction with the endocannabinoid system helps the body maintain balance for peak performance.
Athletes know that they’ll only be at their best if their functions are running efficiently. Many have found activating their endocannabinoid systems with daily CBD is an important part of their training routine. The endocannabinoid system regulates many functions that can play a role in athletic achievement, such as energy balance, metabolism, immune response, sleep behavior, and pain signaling.
With the array of CBD products available for athletes, it’s simple to include CBD in a daily training regimen. CBD supplements can be mixed into a recovery smoothie or shake, taken directly under the tongue, or vaped or dabbed for a more focused experience. After workouts, CBD topicals can be rubbed directly onto sore muscles and joints.
