How Cannabinoid Receptors Work

Cannabinoids help coordinate and regulate most of how we feel, think, and function by interacting with cannabinoid receptors. Like a key fits into a lock, these endocannabinoids are designed to link with cannabinoid receptors.

When cannabinoid receptors link with cannabinoids, the receiving neuron spurs into action, triggering a set of events to pass along the message and carry out a variety of cellular responses needed for balance and healthy functioning.

While there are more than 100 cannabinoids found in cannabis, the most abundant and well-understood cannabinoids are CBD and THC. CBD, a non-psychoactive and highly sought after cannabinoid in recent years, is found most abundantly in hemp. THC, the well-known cannabinoid that causes a high, is found in highest levels in marijuana.

While THC binds directly with both CB1 and CB2 receptors, CBD has little affinity for the cannabinoid receptors. Instead, CBD actually suppresses the CB1 and CB2 activating qualities by blocking them from binding with other cannabinoids like THC.

CBD also interacts with various other receptors throughout the body, including 5-HT1A receptors and the vanilloid receptor TRPV-1.

It’s through this interaction with various receptors within the body that cannabinoids like CBD active and support the endocannabinoid system and its efforts to promote balance and keep our functions running the way they should.
