Unconventional Athletes: Underwater Hockey Players

Underwater hockey is a wild, high-speed sport that is played, as its name suggests, underwater.

Have you ever thought to play hockey wearing fins and a snorkel? Meet underwater hockey, an intense up-and-coming sport you can play in any pool. This offbeat yet globally-played sport, also known as Octopush, is the focus of our latest installment on our ongoing “Unconventional Athletes” series.

Over the past handful of months, we’ve been paying tribute to unconventional athletes participating in bizarre yet demanding sports and events. As the first company to create mainstream hemp-based CBD (cannabidiol) products, you could say we’re exhilarated by the pursuit of pursuing one’s own definition of achievement and refusing to be constrained by convention.

Our CBD products fit right in with athletes like underwater hockey players who challenge themselves physically and mentally to meet their own interpretation of athletic success. We like those who are unconventional, because let’s be real—one could also easily say you’re unconventional if you’re an athlete who takes CBD.

What is Underwater Hockey?

As you would imagine, underwater hockey is a water sport played underwater. Octopush has been around since the early 1950s, and since its birth in the United Kingdom has spread to least 36 countries across six continents.

Underwater Hockey descriptionSimilar to the well-known sport played on ice, water hockey involves two teams of six players each trying to score by hitting a puck into a goal. Wearing fins and snorkels, underwater hockey players use relatively short, 12-inch sticks to move the puck around the pool floor. Players score by successfully hitting the puck all the way through a trough.

Each underwater hockey game lasts 30 minutes, with two 15-minute halves plus a three-minute break that serves as halftime. The game starts with the puck placed at the center of the pool and players from both teams touching the wall above their goal.

As you can imagine, underwater hockey players must have impressive cardiovascular endurance, as well as swimming skills and hand-eye coordination. Like in most sports, injuries like sprains and strains are common. While underwater hockey is technically a non-compact sport, at times players can be hit in the head or mouth.

Despite growing in popularity, underwater hockey remains relatively unknown, or considered unconventional, because it is not particularly spectator friendly. Still, a World Championships for underwater hockey has been held every two years since 1980.

CBD, an Unconventional Supplement

Like playing underwater hockey, taking CBD products can be considered unconventional. Thankfully, more and more athletes are beginning to discover how the benefits of CBD can help in their efforts to reach their athletic performance goals. CBD, or cannabidiol, can help all types of athletes perform physically at their peak and recover more quickly by supporting the body’s own systems.

Extracted from cannabis plants, like hemp, CBD stimulates your endocannabinoid system, a major self-regulatory network responsible for keeping important functions like energy balance, immune response, metabolism, mood, sleep, and more running optimally.

This is why so many athletes have started to incorporate CBD products into their training and competition routine. By supporting the endocannabinoid system, CBD helps keep your body and its functions running at their best. A well-operating endocannabinoid system means you’re able to perform at a higher level and recover from strenuous workouts faster.

Taking CBD as a supplement is also appealing to athletes because unlike THC, CBD is not intoxicating. This means you can take CBD before, during, or after your practices, workouts, or competitions without having any worry that it will temporarily impact your coordination or reaction time.

There are many different ways athletes can add CBD to their day. While vaping CBD using CBD vape oil or CBD dab oil has quickly become the go-to method for most because of its fast natural effects, you can also get your CBD through CBD tinctures, CBD capsules, CBD isolate powder, and CBD edibles. You can even target CBD’s natural balancing effects right to your tired muscles and joints with CBD topicals.
