Unconventional Athletes: Skateboarders
As the Tampa Am kicks off this week in Florida, we give a shout-out to skateboarders, considered by some to be “unconventional” athletes.
It may seem like a stretch to call skateboarders unconventional, considering there are more than 6 million people in the U.S. who consider themselves skaters. But while it’s true that skateboarding is popular, not everyone acknowledges skateboarders as athletes. Skaters are often seen as outsiders, and consequently sometimes the extraordinary athleticism they display is downplayed.
We at Dixie Botanicals® admire unconventional athletes — like skateboarders — who refuse to be confined by traditional thinking and are interested in physically challenging themselves in new ways. And if we’re being honest, one might also consider you an unconventional if you take CBD, the all-natural compound in hemp.
With one of the nation’s most respected skateboarding competitions kicking off this week, we thought it was the perfect time to spotlight skaters, those unconventional athletes who are always challenging themselves to meet their own definition of athletic achievement.
Skateboarding and the Tampa Am
Skateboarding involves riding and performing tricks on a skateboard, a small board mounted on wheels.
Sometimes described as an action sport, skateboarding requires a high level of explosiveness, strength, flexibility, cardiovascular fitness, and coordination. Even basic tricks — like the Ollie, kick flip, frontside and backside pop-shove its, and grinds — takes skill, physical effort, and athleticism.
Skateboarding is thought to have been born sometime in the late 1940s or early 1950s, and since then has become one of the most popular physical activities in the U.S.. A growing number of cities have made available outdoor skate parks designed specifically for street skaters, and the International Olympic Committee has even voted to include skateboarding in the 2020 Summer Games in Tokyo.
This week some of the best male and female extreme skateboarders will head to Tampa in Florida to compete at a nationally recognized amateur skate contest called the Tampa Am. Held at the Skatepark of Tampa since 1995, the indoor warehouse event has grown into the “international proving ground for premier amateurs from around the world.”
At the Tampa Am, competing skaters complete tricks in three-minute jams. A five-judge panel scores them on the difficulty of tricks, style, technique, variety of tricks, use of course, flow, consistency, originality, and more.
This year’s contest kicks off with practice sessions on Thursday, November 8, followed by Qualifiers on Friday and Saturday the 9th and 10th, and then the Semi-Finals and Finals on Sunday the 10th.

An “Unconventional Supplement”: CBD
One might also consider you unconventional if you take CBD. Thankfully, a growing number of athletes are becoming aware of the hemp-derived compound and how it can help naturally boost athletic performance.
CBD is a cannabinoid naturally abundant in hemp. Once absorbed by the body, this plant-derived cannabinoid can augment the body’s own endocannabinoids to support the endocannabinoid system, a crucial signaling network that keeps several functions in balance and running optimally.
A balanced body can perform at a higher level. By stimulating the endocannabinoid system and encouraging its efforts, CBD can help keep your body and its functions running at their best.
All types of athletes and even fitness enthusiasts have found that the natural benefits of incorporating daily hemp-derived CBD into their routines boosts athletic performance, encourages faster recovery, and supports a complete and healthy diet so that their body functions efficiently.
The use of CBD supplements has even started to expand to skaters, who are finding the natural balancing benefits of CBD can help them perform better during skating sessions and recover more quickly after being on their boards for long hours.
