More than ever athletes are appreciating the many benefits of making CBD a part of their training regimens.
More and more athletes are coming out in favor of CBD. We now know more about CBD and how it keeps our bodies running at their best, and every day new athletes – from professional competitors to weekend warriors – discover these benefits for themselves.
Sports can challenge the human body to the brink of its endurance and athletic capabilities. As an athlete, your body is subjected to high impact and overloading, which can make you fatigued and more prone to injury risk. CBD, or cannabidiol, helps athletes keep their bodies at their peak by supplementing the body’s natural endocannabinoid system.
While CBD is non-psychoactive and doesn’t cause a high, in the past it’s been unfairly lumped together with other psychoactive cannabis substances like marijuana and prohibited by many athletic agencies.
Last year, however, competing athletes received good news when the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) and the United States Anti-Doping Agency (USADA) announced that CBD is now approved for use. This opened up the CBD supplementing door for many athletes who participate in amateur and professional sports organizations.
While a growing number of athletes support CBD, these 5 athletes have vocally championed of the natural compound and its benefits:
NFL Linebacker Derrick Morgan
Derrick Morgan, a linebacker for the NFL’s Tennessee Titans, made headlines a couple of years ago when he shared that he regularly uses CBD. He regularly speaks publicly about how he finds CBD beneficial and has become an active advocate for his fellow NFL athletes.
“After researching, finding out more and more about it, I realized this is something guys should know about,” Morgan explained.
Known as an explosive defender, Morgan has been in the NFL since 2010 when he was selected 16th overall by the Titans after playing college football at Georgia Tech. He registered a sack in the very first NFL game of his rookie season.
UFC Fighter Gina Mazany
After the WASA lifted the ban on CBD, professional mixed martial artist Gina Mazany voiced her support for the non-psychoactive compound and its benefits for her fellow athletes. The 29-year old from Anchorage, Alaska, nicknamed “Danger,” is a Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) bantamweight competitor.
“There are so many ways that CBD can benefit everyone in one way or another,” Mazany said at the time.
Mazany, currently the #24th ranked Top Bantamweight fighter, has said she particularly likes using CBD before fights, as she finds it helpful when she’s feeling nervous about the upcoming competition.
Former NFL Tackle Eugene Monroe
Former Baltimore Ravens offensive tackle Eugene Monroe is perhaps the leading advocate for hemp CBD and its benefits for athletes. He has led the charge in encouraging the NFL to allow American football players to take CBD without violating the league’s rules.
Monroe retired from the NFL nearly two years ago at the age 29 and after playing seven seasons. He remains an active supporter of CBD, encouraging the league to investigate how the compound can be a “healthier, more natural way” to help the players keep their bodies in top shape.
Monroe has said he prefers vaping his CBD. He’s also said he rubs topical cannabinoid products into his sore joints and muscles.
MMA Chris Camozzi
UFC professional competitor Chris Camozzi believes CBD has helped keep his sporting career and training program on track over the years. The 31-year-old kickboxer and mixed martial artist started taking hemp-derived CBD oil supplements after a major knee injury and since then has made the products a part of his regular training routine.
“This product has changed my life, and it’s changed the lives of others around me too and for that I am even more thankful,” Camozzi wrote recently in a Reddit post.
Camozzi has said he has a much greater overall feeling of health and wellness since he started incorporating the supplements.
UFC Fighter Nate Diaz
American professional mixed martial artist Nate Diaz openly vaped CBD oil during a post-fight conference last year at a time with the compound was still prohibited by the WADA. He explained to reporters that he regularly uses CBD oil “before and after the fights, training.” He went on to praise the supplement, saying, “It’ll make your life a better place.”
Diaz has competed professionally for the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) since 2007. Before signing with the UFC, he competed in World Extreme Cagefighting, Strikeforce, and Pancrase. Known as a fundamental and pure boxer, Diaz competes in both the lightweight and welterweight divisions of the UFC.
