How to Make Your Own CBD Lip Balm to Soothe Dry, Chapped Winter Lips
CBD lip balm can help nourish, protect, and provide relief from chapping when you’re out in dry winter air.
Cold winter weather is just around the corner, which means it’s time to pay a little extra attention to your lip care. When the air turns dry, the exposed skin on our lips is leached of its natural moisture, leaving it dehydrated and patchy.
Nearly everyone gets dry, chapped lips at various points during the winter. As a dedicated athlete, you don’t want the annoyance of severely chapped lips to slow you down. If you train outside, nourishing and protecting the skin on your lips is even more important.
Fight the winter weather and prevent chapping this year by making your own CBD-infused lip balm. Homemade CBD lip balm takes just 30 minutes or so to make, and it’ll help your lips survive these upcoming frosty months.
Why Add CBD to Lip Balm?
CBD encourages balance in the immune system and many other functions by supporting one of the body’s major regulatory networks.
The all-natural hemp-derived cannabinoid is also a powerful antioxidant, which means it helps prevent or slow damage caused by free radicals, the environmental, and other factors.
These naturally balancing and soothing effects make CBD a great choice for lip balm.
When lip balm is applied topically to the lips, CBD and other natural ingredients are absorbed directly through the skin for targeted nourishment and relief.
Once absorbed, CBD interacts with cannabinoid receptors on the skin’s sensory nerve fibers and subcutaneous tissue, activating a major regulatory network called the endocannabinoid system. The endocannabinoid system is responsible for making sure a wide array of functions adjust for fluctuations caused by factors like the environment so that they continue to run optimally.
It’s because of these natural balancing properties that CBD has grown in popularity in recent years and is now being infused into everything from body butters, skin and hair care products, and yes, lip balm!
Like all hemp-derived CBD products, CBD lip balm is non-intoxicating. Plus, because the CBD in this lip topical interacts with receptors near the skin, the compounds are never absorbed into the bloodstream.
Experienced CBD users appreciate topicals like lip balm containing CBD because they’re able to apply the natural benefits of the cannabinoids right to where they’re needed most.
CBD Lip Balm Recipe
A major benefit of creating your own CBD lip balm is that you have full control of the ingredients you’re adding. You also have say over the serving and amount of CBD used.
This easy CBD lip balm recipe calls for our Dixie Botanicals® CBD Isolate, a pure isolate powder with 99% CBD. CBD isolate makes it easy to decide how potent you want your CBD lip balm to be, and with no odor or flavor, it can be easily integrated into the product.
As you’re measuring out your CBD Isolate, keep in mind that CBD isolate is over 99% pure. Each 1-gram jar contains 990 mg of CBD, so each milligram of the powder represents close to a milligram of active CBD. You can increase or decrease the potency called for in the recipe as you see fit.
This recipe will make about 8 ½-oz lip balm jars or 16 8-mL lip balm tubes.
Here’s what you’ll need to make your own CBD lip balm:
- 40 mg Dixie Botanicals® CBD Isolate
- 3 tablespoons beeswax (pellets ideal)
- 3 tablespoons shea butter
- 2 tablespoons coconut oil
- 3-4 drops vitamin E oil
- 3-4 drops peppermint essential oil
Once you have everything, here’s how to make CBD lip balm:
- Place a clean glass container, such as a Pyrex measuring cup, in the middle of a small saucepan. Fill the saucepan halfway with water. Heat water on medium-high to bring to a simmer.
- Add the beeswax, shea butter, and coconut oil into the glass container. Slowly stir as it melts.
- Once melted, add vitamin E oil. Stir to combine.
- Turn off heat and add in CBD isolate and peppermint essential oil. Again, stir to combine.
- Fill either lipstick tubes or pomade jars with the melted CBD-infused lip balm mixture. You can either use a funnel and pour the liquid balm, or use a clean pipette to suck up the liquid from the glass container and squeeze it into the tubes or jars. Work quickly, as the mixture will begin to solidify almost immediately.
- Let the CBD-infused lip balm set at room temperature until hardened.
Once your CBD lip balm is solid, store your extra filled containers at room temperature. Use them within about six months.
