Is CBD Oil Safe for Athletes?

Athletes considering incorporating CBD oil supplements into their training routine are often curious about the safety of using a cannabis product.

You’ll be happy to hear that CBD oil is safe for athletes of all ages because it is non-toxic, non-intoxicating, and has minimal side effects.

CBD is Non-Toxic and Non-Intoxicating

CBD (cannabidiol) has shown to be safe and non-toxic, even when consumed in high amounts. In 2011, researchers from the University of Sao Paulo, Brazil explored the safety of CBD in a research review titled “Safety and side effects of cannabidiol.”

After investigating the findings in previously published studies, the research team concluded, “high doses up to 1,500 mg/day of CBD are reportedly well tolerated in humans.” This level of CBD intake is far higher than what is present in the suggested servings of Dixie Botanicals® CBD products.

Just last year, German investigators set out to extend and update the 2011 review’s findings by exploring new evidence from more recent studies in their article, “An update on safety and side effects of cannabidiol: A review of clinical data and relevant animal studies.”

Their findings were consistent with those of the earlier review, and “the often described favorable safety profile of CBD in humans was confirmed and extended by the reviewed research.”

Hemp-derived CBD oil is also non-intoxicating, so you don’t have to worry about it adversely impacting your coordination, mental focus, or reaction time.

While hemp’s cousin marijuana is specifically bred to contain high levels of tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), the compound that causes a high, hemp naturally contains no more than 0.3 percent THC by dry weight, far less than the amount needed to be intoxicating.

Instead, hemp naturally produces significant levels of CBD, making it an ideal source for CBD supplements.

CBD is Well Tolerated

CBD has become the cannabinoid of choice for many athletes because it is highly tolerable. The side effects that some people have reported experiencing are minimal and often easily alleviated, and in most cases will not cause a positive drug test.

The most common side effects tied to CBD include:

  • Dry mouth: A dry sensation in the mouth is one of the most commonly reported side effects of CBD. This effect may be related to the endocannabinoid system — the regulatory system that CBD interacts with — inhibiting the secretion of saliva.
  • Low blood pressure: There have been reports suggesting that high daily servings of CBD oil may cause a minimal drop in blood pressure. In some cases, the low blood pressure can cause a feeling of lightheadedness. If you’re on blood pressure medication or have any concerns about your blood pressure, you should talk with your doctor before taking CBD.
  • Drowsiness or wakefulness: In most cases, CBD has awakening properties. Occasionally, when taken in higher doses, CBD can cause drowsiness. Depending on how CBD oil affects you, you may want to adjust your intake and experiment with the ideal time to take CBD.
  • Alters how some medicines are metabolized: Studies suggest that CBD can inhibit cytochrome P450, a group of liver enzymes responsible for breaking down pharmaceutical drugs. This temporary effect can alter how some medicines are metabolized and increase their effects.
