How CBD Can Boost Cupping Therapy

January 18, 2019

Learn about the recovery treatment known as cupping, and how you can use your CBD product to maximize its benefits.

While cupping has been around for centuries, it was thrust into the spotlight after Olympic swimmer Michael Phelps revealed the treatment’s telltale skin marks on his back at the 2016 Rio Games.

For many athletes, cupping is an integral piece of their recovery regimen. Like CBD, cupping can help an athlete bounce back better after a particular strenuous workout.

Here’s an explanation of cupping and what it’s used for, as well as how you can augment the treatment by incorporating CBD products.

What is Cupping Therapy?

Cupping therapy is an ancient form of alternative medicine. The process involves a therapist placing special cups on your skin for a few minutes to create suction. Historically, many people have used cupping to complement their care for various issues and conditions.

One of the oldest medical textbooks, the Ebers Papyrus, describes cupping therapy being used by ancient Egyptians in 1,550 B.C. Ge Hong, a famous Taoist alchemist and herbalist, reportedly used cupping when he lived from A.D. 281 to 341.

Originally, cupping was performed using animal horns. Today, cups can be made of glass, ceramic, bamboo, earthenware, silicone, or plastic. They’re typically round in shape and feature a single open end.

There are two modern categories of cupping: Dry cupping and wet cupping. Dry cupping involves suction only. Wet cupping involves both suction and controlled medicinal bleeding created by the practitioner making a small incision after removing the cup.

During a cupping treatment, a cup is heated up and then placed with the open side directly onto the skin. After the hot cup is placed on the skin, the air within the cup cools to create a vacuum. This draws your skin slightly upward into the cup and away from the underlying muscles. The cups are typically left in place for 3 to 10 minutes. During that time, your skin reddens as blood vessels expand.

Some practitioners now opt to use rubber pumps to create suction rather than heat. This allows them to move around on your skin for a massage-type treatment.

Uses and Benefits of Cupping Therapy

The idea behind cupping is that it increases blood flow to the area where the cups are placed, reducing soreness and speeding recovery of overworked muscles. An increase in blood circulation could relieve muscle tension and promote cell repair.

Healthline points out that many Taoists believe that cupping helps restore balance between the negative and positive, or “yin and yang,” within the body. Their belief is that restoring the balance between these two extremes improves the body’s resistance to pathogens.

Athletes who use cupping swear by its benefits, saying that it speeds up recovery. It’s not uncommon for athletes to regularly schedule cupping treatments into their regimen, using the therapy as a type of deep-tissue massage

While there’s no doubt that many athletes, coaches and trainers believe in the benefits of cupping, only a few studies have looked into whether the treatment actually offers a real physiological effect. So far, a handful of studies suggest cupping may be helpful for addressing chronic neck pain, back pain, and knee arthritis.

Why Add CBD to Your Cupping Therapy?

CBD can help maximize the recovery benefits of your cupping treatments by promoting balance in your systems.

CBD, an all-natural and non-intoxicating cannabinoid derived from cannabis, is used as a dietary supplement for supporting your body’s endocannabinoid system. The endocannabinoid system, or ECS, is one of the largest self-regulating networks. Everything from immune system response, metabolism, mood, sleep, coordination and more is kept balanced and running optimally by the endocannabinoid system.

How well your ECS keeps functions balanced plays a direct role in your athletic performance and ability to recovery quickly.

If you follow a rigorous training regimen, chances are your body is thrown of balance due to the physical exertion. CBD encourages the ECS to regulate and maintain balance by interacting with its cannabinoid receptors, found in the brain and throughout the body.

By adding the restorative benefits of CBD, you can capitalize on the recovery benefits of cupping therapy.
