The passage of the 2018 Farm Bill legalized hemp on a federal level. Here’s what that means for CBD consumers like you.
This week Donald Trump signed into law the 2018 Farm Bill, a wide-reaching $867 billion piece of legislation that provides billions in aid to U.S. farmers and funds the federal food stamp programs.
Why should you care if you take CBD? The bill also includes groundbreaking provisions that fully legalize hemp in the U.S.
Hemp is the non-intoxicating variety of cannabis and it’s used to make CBD supplements like the ones from Dixie Botanicals®. Hemp is naturally abundant in CBD, or cannabidiol, the compound that supports your athletic endeavors by helping to keep your body and its functions balanced.
Hemp and CBD are both going to be radically altered with the exciting new hemp policy in the 2018 Farm Bill. Here we explain how.
Nationwide Hemp and CBD Legalization
The passage of the 2018 Farm Bill eliminates any and all confusion as to whether hemp-derived CBD oil products are legal.
For years, hemp CBD oil companies in the U.S. have legally operated under a 2004 Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals ruling that prohibited the DEA from interfering with the production of hemp-based foods.
While hemp was classified as a controlled substance and prohibited under federal law, this ruling allowed hemp-derived CBD oil products to be legally used, bought, and sold. This had caused some confusion as to whether hemp CBD was actually legal.
The hemp provision in the new Farm Bill completely removes hemp from the Controlled Substances Act and reclassifies it as an agricultural commodity. It leaves no doubt that hemp can be legally “cultivated for any use,” including to extract CBD.
While states can regulate hemp and hemp CBD as they choose moving forward, this new federal policy completely changes the playing field for hemp-derived CBD products.
Push CBD into the Mainstream
Hemp legalization will no doubt help propel CBD further into the mainstream. A growing number of consumers who had perhaps been on the fence about CBD will now be more open to adding CBD products into their routines.
Also, large retail outlets and other distributors will now be more comfortable bringing hemp CBD products into their stores. This will not only make CBD more available, but will also help build awareness around the all-natural compound and its benefits.
While many exciting benefits of CBD have already been discovered, scientists will have a much easier time studying the compound’s effects now that hemp is legal. The way hemp had been classified before created regulatory and funding obstacles that made research difficult. As scientists learn more about hemp CBD oil and how its compounds interact with the human body, interest from consumers will no doubt continue to grow.
You’ll likely start to notice more of your teammates and training partners inquiring about cannabis. Now is the ideal time to introduce them to CBD. There are many misconceptions and myths about CBD out there. You’ve been there with CBD, so help them out by giving them an idea of what to expect with the supplement and explaining how it can help augment their training.

What it Means For Hemp
The passage of the 2018 Farm Bill is also going to help revolutionize how hemp is acknowledged and used in this country.
While U.S. farmers had been prohibited from growing hemp commercially in the past, now they’ll be able to legally grow, harvest, process, and sell the plant.
Hemp is an incredibly versatile and useful crop. You recognize it as being a great source of CBD, but its applications extend to thousands of products. Hemp’s stalks and seeds can be used to make food, body care products, paper, textiles, biofuels, bioplastic, and even green construction materials.
With hemp legal and interest in hemp-based products growing, infrastructure to manage this growing demand is inevitable. Innovation will lead to new discoveries of how to best grow and use hemp.
