Unconventional Athletes: Tomato Tossers

August 29, 2018

As the world’s largest tomato fight gets under way today in Spain, we celebrate all you unconventional athletes out there who aren’t confined by traditional sports or supplements.

There are traditional sports – such as basketball, swimming, soccer, and wrestling – and then there are unconventional sports, like tomato throwing.

Tomato throwing?

Today is La Tomatina, an annual festival that brings together thousands of unconventional athletes to Spain for an hour-long tomato fight.

At Dixie Botanicals®, we appreciate all you unconventional athletes out there who refuse to conform to old school or traditional sports, training methods, and supplements.

Our CBD supplements have garnered a great deal of interest from athletes open-minded to new ideas. While it’s true that all types of athletes have started to incorporate CBD into their daily training regimen, it takes a bit of an unconventional mindset to begin CBD supplementing.

That’s why in our series, “Unconventional Athletes,” we highlight those athletes who compete in unique sports and games and push themselves to new levels and in new ways. Today, we celebrate the adrenaline-junkie tomato throwers competing at today’s La Tomatina Festival.

What is La Tomatina?

Every year on the last Wednesday in August, thousands of people gather in the small city of Buñol, Spain for La Tomatina, the “world’s biggest tomato fight.”

The popular festival, started in 1945, has since become a tradition of sorts and over the years has built an international following. Today, the small town of just 2,000 people will welcome about 20,000 tomato throwers from all corners of the world.

In the morning, large trucks arrive in the centre of the village, Plaza del Pueblo, carrying more than 160 tons of over-ripe tomatoes to be distributed to the fruit-flingers.

For a full hour, the tomato throwers engage in the ultimate tomato fight, painting the narrow main road and nearby plastic-protected storefronts with juice and pulp.

The extreme tomato fight is ultimately a free-for-all, except for a handful of rules:

  • No bottles or hard objects allowed.
  • No ripping other people’s shirts.
  • Tomatoes must be squashed before throwing to minimize discomfort and reduce injury risk.
  • Keep a safe distance from the trucks filled with tomatoes.

Two shots signal the end of the event. Afterward, fire engines hose down both the streets and the participants.

An Unconventional Supplement for Athletes: CBD

Like tomato throwing, CBD supplements are considered by most to be unconventional. Still, CBD supplements have taken the athletic world by storm, and everyone from MMA fighters to NFL linebackers has discovered the compound’s natural benefits.

CBD is an all-natural cannabinoid found in cannabis plants like hemp. CBD can be used to supplement the body’s natural endocannabinoid system, a signaling network that keeps the body and its functions running at their peak. Important processes like metabolism, energy balance, and immune response are kept in balance when the endocannabinoid system functions properly.

No matter what sport you play – whether it’s more conventional like baseball or unconventional like tomato tossing – you can benefit from the natural balancing properties of CBD supplements.

Dixie Botanicals® offers a variety of CBD supplements that are ideal for athletes, including great tasting CBD tinctures, powerful CBD Isolate, convenient CBD vape oil cartridges for easy vaping, B-vitamin infused energy chews, and a fragrant CBD topical salve to address tired muscles and joints.

You can learn more about the benefits of CBD supplements for athletes through the Dixie Botanicals® blog, or get started with CBD today through the Dixie Botanicals® online store.
