How Athletes Can Add CBD to Their Diet

October 3, 2018

Taking your CBD with food can improve how well the compound is absorbed by your body.

As more is discovered about the benefits of cannabidiol (CBD) and how it naturally boosts performance, many athletes are finding unique ways to incorporate the all-natural compound into the foods they eat every day.

Athletes are rigorous about their meals, recognizing that the foods and beverages they consume are crucial for providing their body with the fuel and nutrients it needs to perform at a high level.

Many are now just as meticulous about their daily CBD supplements, as they’ve come to rely on the balancing properties of the compound to encourage better athletic performance and recovery.

Here’s how you can combine your food and cannabinoid needs into meals you can enjoy morning, afternoon, or evening.

Why Should Athletes Add CBD To Their Diet?

For athletes, CBD can be a crucial component to their training regimen. Taken as a daily supplement, CBD helps your body and its functions run optimally so that you perform at a high level.

CBD promotes balance in the body by supporting the endocannabinoid system, a major regulatory network made up of endocannabinoids, cannabinoid receptors, and enzymes that is tasked with regulating a wide array of functions.

A properly functioning endocannabinoid system is crucial to being able to push your body to new limits and to recover quickly. Several issues have been associated with a situation called endocannabinoid deficiency, which is when a lack of cannabinoids or cannabinoid receptors prevents the endocannabinoid system from being effective.

As a plant-derived cannabinoid, CBD is able to interact with the endocannabinoid system’s cannabinoid receptors similar to how your body’s own endocannabinoids do.

Through this interaction, CBD augments the body’s own endocannabinoids and stimulates the endocannabinoid system to support its effects to keep the body and its functions properly balanced.

While CBD supplements can be taken on their own, taking them with food may actually increase how well the compounds are absorbed. This means that more CBD reaches the circulatory system and faster.

When you take your CBD supplement as part of a meal, the CBD and other active compounds are absorbed through your digestive system. This process can take minutes to an hour. Eventually, the CBD compounds reach your bloodstream, where they can interact with your body’s systems.

Adding CBD to Breakfast

While there really is no one perfect time to take CBD, morning is likely the most popular time for athletes to take their daily serving of CBD. You can start every day balanced by stimulating your endocannabinoid system first thing.

While athletes respond to CBD differently, many have reported that they feel more awake and energized after taking their supplement. That’s why CBD-infused coffee and smoothies are growing in popularity.

For a unique way to add CBD to your breakfast, try infusing CBD Isolate into a bowl of savory oatmeal. A great source of whole grain carbohydrates, oatmeal provides a sustained release of energy perfect for pushing through a full day of practice, weight training, conditioning, and more. Consider adding a side of one or two soft-boiled eggs to add a source of protein.

Adding CBD to Lunch

While CBD, when taken with food, can be absorbed and start interacting with your body’s cannabinoid receptors within minutes to an hour later, the full benefits of a stimulated endocannabinoid system may not be fully experienced right away.

Many athletes have found greater benefit by taking multiple CBD supplements in a day. By adding it to your lunch after an initial morning serving, you can help the endocannabinoid system stay at its best by maintaining CBD levels.

At lunchtime, consider adding CBD into a nutrient-packed tuna melt. Tuna is an excellent source of protein and omega-3 fats.

Adding CBD to Dinner

Some athletes have found they prefer taking their daily CBD supplements in the evening, as it provides them with a sense of “relaxation” or “calm.”

For a CBD-infused dinner that will build carbohydrate stores so that your brain and body is ready to hit it hard the next morning, try this pesto pasta with roasted chickpeas.

The complex carbohydrates found in pasta provide your body with glucose, and chickpeas are a great source of vegetarian protein and fiber.
